Oh my god, this face serum!

pAra Apothecary is blowing me away with their thoughtful and delicious formulations. The Immortal Facial Serum is a perfect hydration product for any skin type. There are so many great things about this product that I hardly know where to start. It's packed full of humectants like aloe, glycerin, and hyaluronic acid to draw and hold water close to the skin for superb hydration. Throw in a tetra-peptide for collagen boosting, resveratrol for kick-ass antioxidant power, and licorice for calming and you've got a well rounded serum to pair with your moisturizer.

pAra Apothecary are crafters of fine organic, small batch products from New York City.

Marula oil for awesome skin!

Hydrating skin oils have come a long way since I was first introduced to the concept through Decleor products. I loved the feel of those oils, however with my oily, acne prone skin I was always concerned about adding more oil to the problem. Formulators have searched far and deep for lighter, quicker absorbing, and even anti-microbial oils that won’t exacerbate breakouts for people with acne prone and oily skin types. One such oil is Marula, found in the nut of the Marula fruit tree. Indigenous to Namibia, Africa, the Marula tree has been used for centuries in skin and hair care. The oil is light, fast absorbing, and full of beneficial nutrients and essential fatty acids for fighting oxidation, even more so than Argan oil. Vitamins E and C are present in high quantities and are excellent for correcting sun damage and promoting wound healing. Omegas and fatty acids improve skin elasticity, soften lines, and reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks.

Marula oil is one of the base oils in the Active Infusion Serum by Josh Rosebrook Skincare. It’s a perfect light-weight hydrator for use alone or layered with the Hydrating Accelerator for extra moisture. When used together, the Serum locks in the aloe-based hydration provided by the Accelerator. During winter months when skin tends to dry out from indoor heating and low humidity outdoors, skin needs extra help maintaining water and oil levels or it becomes tight, itchy, and chapped.

Get supple again with a facial at Monarch Brow & Facial Studio. Pick up the Hydrating Accelerator and Active Infusion Serum to take the organic goodness home with you.

Eyebrow rehab. Halp!

Last visit home for the holidays we found a treasure trove box full of printed photos. So many great memories and so many eyebrow coifs to laugh at. It’s funny how you can tell which decade a photo belongs to by the eyebrow style. There were my full, wooly brows from middle and high school, and then the 90’s happened. Apparently, the 90’s decade was a hair thief. Thanks, Gwen Stefani. Luckily, even after all the destruction, I was able to grow *most* of them back in. Some folks didn’t get so lucky. (And this is why we’re thankful for new semi-permanent eyebrow microblading techniques!)
Coming off an eyebrow plucking bender? Let me help you. Is your face stuck in a previous decade? Please, take my hand, and together, we’ll get through this.

Semi-Permanent Brow Enhancement aftercare

It is essential that you follow these instructions after your Microblading/Hybrid Brow sessions:
Day One (day of the treatment): included aftercare product will be applied to your eyebrows before leaving the studio. Thirty minutes post procedure you'll rinse with water only to remove the lymph from the skin and then reapply the  ointment. Wash your face in the evening being careful to very gently clean the eyebrows. Apply ointment product with a cotton swab in a thin layer to coat the fresh lines. It does not take much.
Day Two-Nine: Wash face as usual. Apply the ointment to your eyebrows twice daily, or as directed. Apply with a cotton swab and use no aggressive movement or manipulation of the skin. Make sure your hands are completely clean before caring for your eyebrows.
The following MUST BE AVOIDED during all nine days post-Microblading procedure:
Eyebrow makeup
Excessive sweating (if you cannot avoid sweating, it's imperative to wash your face ASAP)
Playing sports/hot yoga
Hot sauna or steam room
Sunbathing or salon tanning
Any laser or chemical peelings, and/or any creams containing glycolic acid or Retin-A on the face
Picking, peeling, or scratching of the micropigmented area in order to avoid scarring or removal of the pigment
High dust areas (garage or basement cleaning)
Drinking alcohol in excess as it may lead to slower healing of wounds
Touching the eyebrow area except for when rinsing/cleansing and applying of aftercare treatment with a clean cotton swab

Itching and flaking may appear during the first seven days post enhancement procedure, however, experience has shown that these symptoms can be reduced by following the above instructions. The healing of deeper wounds might last between 14-21 days. Touch ups and/or correction of the shape/design is recommended only after this period.

Your new semi-permanent eyebrows will go through several phases during the healing cycle. The pigment will appear very sharp and dark immediately after the procedure. This is because the pigment is still sitting on top of your skin and has not yet settled in completely. The color of the pigment will soften gradually and the lines will become thinner. Do not be alarmed if you see some pigment in the cotton swab as this is excess pigment and/or body fluid that is naturally exiting your skin.
Once the healing of the skin starts it will look like dandruff flakes or dry skin. This might give you the impression that the color pigment is fading too quickly, however, this is just superficial color and dry skin being naturally removed from your eyebrows.
Once completely healed, always protect your ink with a layer of sunscreen, SPF 30, or more. *Sun exposure, the use of retinoids, peels, laser treatments and other powerful exfoliators can cause the pigmentation to fade prematurely.*
To preserve the look of your eyebrows, retouching every 12 months is necessary. Your eyebrows will fade gradually over time, which is desired as our faces and coloring change.
You can now enjoy your beautiful new semi-permanent eyebrows!

What to Expect on your initial Microblade visit

Prep for eyebrow microblading is just as important as aftercare. You’ll get the best possible results when you adhere to the following prep steps. I’ll detail the aftercare steps in my next blog post.
A full day before your service you’ll want to end all blood thinning meds and supplements, like physician prescribed thinners, fish oil, alcoholic beverages, and pain relievers. These items cause the brow area to bleed easier. If you’re on prescription thinners you’ll want to talk to your doctor about the best way to taper your meds in a way that’s safe for you.
What to expect on your first visit to Monarch Brow & Facial Studio for microblading:
First, we’ll consult about your expectations. Listening to your needs, challenges, and desires is my job. I want you to leave happy with your new brows.
After chatting, we’ll map out your eyebrow shape using an adjustable tool designed to measure your face proportions. Once you’re happy with the map, we’ll move on to placing each hair in the brow with the microblade. Each blade is a pre-packaged, sterile, single use blade.
After the first round of lines are in, we can numb the skin for the pigment packing segment. I don’t numb the skin at the beginning of the procedure because it’s imperative that the hair lines be precise and fine; the numbing agent can cause the lines to become fuzzy. We’ll finish up with an awesome product called PhiShield for soothing and protecting. PhiShield is a beeswax based, essential oil boosted balm designed to soften and nourish the skin as it heals.
